Unused mock up of a layout design exploring the use of format in a lighthearted way. The presentation of the tightly tracked, partially cropped first word is intended to suggest close as in 'near' and its meaning as 'shut' only emerges through the use of its opposite.

Painting With Words ed.2

February 2009

Following the original book printed in May 2008, I later released a limited edition paperback version. While the content remains mostly similar, the typography illustration on the front is printed directly onto the cover (outside, spine and inside).

Massin

February 2009

Double page spread from the paperback edition of Painting With Words about French graphic designer & typographer Massin. The focus is primarily on his graphic interpretation of Eugène Ionesco's play, 'La Cantatrice Chauve' and its dramatic use of expressive typography.

Hansjörg Mayer

April 2008

Double page layout design about the artist Hansjörg Mayer. The composition is based on one of his concrete poems. I first drew it in pencil, scanned and then reversed it to accentuate the effect created by pencil lines.

A3 pencil reproduction of an existing typography design. Used as the basis for a double page spread in Painting With Words.

Contradiction

March 2006

Main part of a large format screenprint. It was then cut, folded and glued to form a small booklet that unfolds out into its respective parts. The subject being 'contradiction', the piece features a paper cut-out stationery kit.

Limited series sold at the 9th International Contemporary Artists Book Fair at the Dean Clough Galleries in Halifax, UK.
