Olive & Twist
January 2011
A newly launched small web design start-up based in Belgium, Olive & Twist was after a unique and memorable logo to reflect their company characteristics and objectives. Interested in custom typography, they wanted something modern, fun and simple to communicate their friendly, trustworthy and professional approach.
I started off by experimenting with different lettering and how to incorporate the key elements in an appropriate overall style. Drawing with a thick chinese calligraphy brush led to a thick, casual script with a sturdy feel. Ligatures, such as the 'tw', were born out of the natural flow of the letters when drawn.
In the digital version, I ended up with two slightly different 'st' ligatures, #1 quite unusual with a twisted curve and #2, slightly more conventional with a subtle heart shape in its negative space.
An alternate design emphasised a friendly and personal feel (bottom image). Other ideas including mixing a sans serif with a hand-drawn 'and' but we felt it lacked a personal feel.
I also helped out Olive & Twist with a letterpress business card design, printed by Mama's Sauce in the USA.
